It can be hard teaching our children about holidays and traditions that are important to our families, but it doesn't have to be. Muslims celebrate Ramadan during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar (March 22, 2023 - April 20, 2023) in prayer, helping others, and  spending quality time with family. As meaningful at this time is, little ones may struggle staying engaged.

Looking for ways to get your children involved this year? We've got you covered! Here are 5 ways to make learning about Ramadan fun:

1. Learn on YouTube
Sometimes our children learn best by hearing it from other children. Take a few minutes together to watch some information videos, such as this one:

2. Food
Ramadan is celebrated by breaking fast with meats, cheeses, breads, vegetables, and sweets. Try teaching your little one about the significance of food during this time by making Pistachio Baklava together.

3. Make Eid Cards
The crescent moon is an important symbol of Ramadan. It represents the guidance of God as the trade routes between Islam and Arabia navigated by the moon and stars.
Grab some construction paper and your favorite craft supplies and make a card to show your appreciation of a loved one. Artsy Craftsy Mom has a great example here!

4. Introduce Giving Back
Charity is one of five pillars of Islam, so of course it plays a huge role during Ramadan. Take this as an opportunity to teach your children about the importance of giving back and helping others.

5. Have Fun with Henna
At the end of the Ramadan celebration, many women and children enjoy decorating themselves with henna. Henna is a safe and temporary paste, so it won't hard your child's skin.
